New Richmond on the Ohio was once the largest and most flourishing village, and officially a County Seat of Clermont County. Blessed with fertile plain, many fruit-fields encircled the bustling community, the people of New Richmond worked hard at that time to rival Cincinnati in culture and arts.  Located along the banks of the Ohio River, the village still enjoys a superior location about twenty miles East and South of Cincinnati, and we still work hard to maintain a peaceful charm that invites all to sit a spell on our river bank.

Originally laid out as Robert Beal's survey No. 847 (purchased by Gen. Wm. Lytle in 1813) and David Jackson's Survey No. 1539 (purchased by Jacob Light in 1814), it is thought that Survey No. 1539 was then platted by a nephew of Mr. Light who had formerly resided in Richmond, Virginia, thus the name would be a compliment to his own hometown.

Gen. Lytle conveyed his acreage eventually to Thomas Ashburn, who platted the village of Susanna (named for his own wife) adjoining the upper east side of New Richmond. Among the principal features of Susanna was a large promenade along the Ohio River which still exists today. Although the two villages engaged in economic competition, an act of the Ohio General Assembly in 1828 joined and christened both officially as New Richmond.

New Richmond also was a busy hub of steamboat building and names such as Allegheny, Zephyr, numerous Lancaster(s), William Tell, and Clermont are reminiscent in stories that waft poetically through this idyllic enclave.  We have other stories as well, James Birney printed his abolitionist news here briefly at Willow and Walnut before heading to Cincinnati, we had a couple of hangings, and Ole Doc Rogers was wakened from slumber in the wee hours one April morning to deliver a future President.  One of Harriet Beecher Stowe's brothers hung out at Cranston Memorial for some very interesting meetings, and we've heard of a few ghosts that just may walk within our late 1800's Italianate architecture.

If you haven't visited, do so soon.  Make New Richmond a stop on a lazy morning or afternoon of exploring the history of the Victorian Era at Ross Gowdy Museum (New Richmond), the birthplace and Ohio history of U.S. Grant (Pt. Pleasant, Bethel and Georgetown), the Underground Railroad(New Richmond, Moscow), arts (Lost Steeple, Front Street Gallery, Maple Creek)or hunting ghosts.  Come on over, we'd be happy to rustle up some hospitality, as well as a meal, and help you discover the gem of New Richmond on the Ohio.
